With fewer than three weeks until training camp opens, General Manager Brian Gutekunst has time to make a few final changes before the Green Bay Packers commence team activities. However, that should not deter him from seeking enhancements during the preseason if the appropriate opportunity arises.
If the Packers make any extra acquisitions, it will most likely be on the defensive side of the ball. This offseason, the team did an excellent job of surrounding quarterback Jordan Love with additional talent—both in the receiving corps and on the offensive line. However, there is still a notable hole on defense: the Packers lack a real No. 1 cornerback and a pass rusher of superstar caliber to anchor the defensive line.
Green Bay is counting on internal improvement, believing that Jeff Hafley and DeMarcus Covington can improve the defense through development. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to look into a few more options, whether on the free agent market or in potential trades with other NFL clubs. With that in mind, AtoZ Sports writer Wendell Ferreira, Colts beat writer Destin Adams, and Saints beat reporter Adam Holt proposed a massive three-team deal involving the Packers, Giants, and Raiders.
The proposed trading terms are as follows:
Kayvon Thibodeaux, an edge rusher, is joining the Packers.
Raiders receive wide receiver Romeo Doubs.
Giants acquire tight end Michael Mayer and a fourth-round pick from Green Bay.
Wendell then outlined why the trade makes sense for Green Bay, noting that Kayvon Thibodeaux’s profile is similar to the type of guy Brian Gutekunst normally seeks.
“Despite the group’s poor production in 2024, the Packers did not invest heavily in the edge defensive position this offseason. Even though general manager Brian Gutekunst is not known for being aggressive in the trade market, Wendell noted that Kayvon Thibodeaux is a guy he would consider. “The edge rusher is young, plays a premium position, was a past top-5 choice, and has a proven track record of success in the NFL. The Packers would absorb $4.978 million in 2025 and $14.751 million in 2026, which is a great deal.”
Wendell also mentioned Romeo Doubs’ contract status, stating that it may impact Green Bay’s decision to include him in a trade package.
“Parting ways with Romeo Doubs might not be an easy decision, but he’s entering the final year of his rookie deal, the Packers haven’t wanted to give him an early extension, and his ceiling is limited,” he explained. “To make things fair, Green Bay would also send the Giants a fourth-round pick, but that’s still a great net value to the roster.”
Kayvon Thibodeaux had 21 sacks and 121 pressures throughout his first three seasons with the Giants. In 2024, New York traded for Brian Burns before selecting Abdul Carter third overall in the 2025 NFL draft. While Thibodeaux should still get some playing time in New York, the hefty investments in Burns and Carter—both projected starters—may make Thibodeaux available for trade.
