The San Diego Padres are hoping to maintain their lead in the National League wildcard race, with other teams vying for the three berths. One way the Padres believe they can remain afloat is by strengthening their rotation. That’s why CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson believes Pittsburgh Pirates starter Mitch Keller is a viable candidate for general manager A.J. Preller. “Would the Pirates genuinely move Keller around 18 months into his five-year contract? “I’m not sure, but there’s a logic to it,” Anderson wrote. “They desperately need bats, and because of his price, he’s likely to be deemed more expendable than, say, injured righty Jared Jones or upcoming arrival Bubba Chandler.”
Keller has a diverse arsenal (he’s a supinator, which means he moves around the ball rather than through it) and is on track for his fifth consecutive 30-plus appearance season.” As Anderson pointed out, it’s difficult to see Pittsburgh trade Keller this early in his contract. However, the Pirates are no strangers to capitalizing on a sellers’ market and reaping large profits. Keller’s ERA finally dropped to 3.90 during his most recent start.
He’s the type of pitcher that every team wants to have since he produces results on a reasonably cheap contract. That doesn’t mean the Padres won’t have to give up a good deal to get him, but Preller will undoubtedly attempt his magic.
The Padres do not have the farm system they once had, but that does not mean the organization is devoid of young talent that the Pirates would seek in any trade.
