The New York Mets have a path to being World Series favorites in 2025. It might also be through a major, blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox. But what would be the cost of such a massive transaction?
Despite a surprising downturn over the last two weeks in which they dropped 10 of 11, the Mets remain only three games away from having the best record in baseball. However, the recent slump revealed that the team has significant weaknesses. And the starting lineup may be cooling down after a blazing start to the season.
Upgrading second or third base, designated hitter, the bullpen, and getting a playoff-ready starter are all priorities as the July trade deadline approaches. Well, there is a well-known team that may be selling soon, as well as numerous players who can address all of New York’s difficulties.
“If they don’t mind a modern-day Boston Tea Party with everyone ripping up their tickets, the Red Sox could set the trade deadline ablaze by dealing Alex Bregman before he opts out or trading outfielder Jarren Duran,” USA Today MLB expert Bob Nightengale said this week. “Boston could part with closer Aroldis Chapman and starter Walker Buehler, who joined in the winter on a one-year deal.”
Adding Bregman, Chapman, and Buehler might be the type of game-changing trade that propels the Mets to the top of the National League. But should they pursue such a big deal?

The New York Mets have the necessary pieces to be a title contender again in 2025. Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Juan Soto form a formidable batting order. When healthy, a starting rotation led by Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, and David Peterson is formidable, despite the lack of marquee talent. Despite their recent struggles, they still have a strong bullpen. However, more is required to complete the journey.
And the Red Sox have the right players to flesh out their roster for a World Series run. Bregman is an All-Star caliber player who may play second or third.
Placing him at third, allowing Ronny Mauricio and Jeff McNeil to platoon at second, and moving Mark Vientos to designated hitter may bolster all three positions with a single addition. Furthermore, Bregman improves his game in the postseason.

Despite age 37, Chapman is having a season that could lead to his eighth All-Star appearance. He is the type of strong reliever that the team needs to pair with Edwin Diaz in the postseason. Walker Buehler, a Dodgers veteran, is having a terrible season (5-5 record, 6.29 ERA).
However, the Mets discovered last season that he is an absolute gem in the playoffs. Furthermore, adding him to the rotation may force former Yankees closer Clay Holmes to the bullpen for the postseason.
At first sight, it appears that there will be a large payroll increase this year and in the future. However, as Nightengale said, Bregman is likely to explore free agency this offseason. Chapman is a free agent following the season. Buehler also has a mutual option that the Mets can choose not to exercise if he disappoints. But what would be the asset cost of such a large transaction?
What would the New York Mets have to give up to acquire Bregman, Chapman, and Buehler?
In order to acquire the Boston trio, New York will almost certainly have to give up some valuable assets. However, with Buehler having a bad year and all three possibly leaving after the season, it helps to reduce the cost slightly.
Top-10 prospects Ryan Clifford and/or Drew Gilbert might be included in a potential mega-deal for the three of multi-time All-Stars. As well as Nolan McLean, a Triple-A right-hander. However, elite talents such as Jett Williams, Brandon Sproat, and Jonah Tong will remain untouchable in such a deal.

The Red Sox acquire: Starling Marte, Ryan Clifford, Drew Gilbert, Nolan McLean, Luisangel Acuna, Brett Baty, and a player to be announced later.
Starling Marte is one of the guys with major league experience who will most likely be included. Send some money back to Boston. They won’t mind as he’ll be off the books after the season. Furthermore, fan favorite Luisangel Acuna is expected to be included, while New York may try to recruit Brett Baty. Despite his recent troubles, the Mets are unlikely to release former top prospect Francisco Alvarez just yet.
