Green Bay Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper is one of the team’s top breakout prospects heading into 2025 following a subtly significant rookie campaign. The former Texas A&M standout’s instincts, sideline-to-sideline speed, and football sense allowed him to make an impression even though he only started four games last season, earning him a position on the NFL’s All-Rookie Team.
Cooper, who was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, immediately made an impression whenever he took the field. He constantly displayed the athleticism and football IQ that made him a standout in the SEC, whether he was chasing down running backs in open space or dominating screen plays. Even though he experienced the typical growing pains of a rookie season, such as missed tackles and play recognition errors, his potential was undeniable.
“He didn’t look like a rookie when the lights came on,” said Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. “He plays with aggression, has great closing speed, and the moment was never too big for him. You can’t teach that.”
Cooper finished his rookie season with 57 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, and a pair of forced fumbles in limited action. He also logged double-digit special teams tackles, showcasing his versatility and buy-in—something the Packers coaching staff values highly.
Heading into year two, expectations are climbing. The Packers believe Cooper is ready to step into a full-time starting role and potentially become the heart of their young, aggressive defense. With veteran linebackers stepping into supporting roles and the front seven undergoing a youth movement, Cooper is being positioned as a foundational piece for the future.
Elite burst, excellent tackling form, developing coverage skills, and an unrelenting motor are all present. The task at hand involves honing the game’s cerebral component. Before training camp, coaches have commended his leadership development, video study, and work ethic over the offseason.
According to head coach Matt LaFleur, “he wants to be great, not just good.” “For most guys, that’s what makes the difference in year two.”
Cooper has the potential to become Green Bay’s first Pro Bowl linebacker since Clay Matthews if he can advance and maintain his health. The Packers are placing a wager that Edgerrin Cooper will be the future face of their defense rather than just another bright draft pick.
