For the past few months, the New York Yankees have been in dire need of infield depth. However, they haven’t done anything to aid up to this moment. Actually, Oswaldo Cabrera’s injury has put the Yankees’ depth to the test even more. The Bronx Bombers will undoubtedly need to make a trade in the upcoming weeks, but it’s unclear exactly who they will target before the trade deadline.
In an attempt to cover the infield hole in the Bronx, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently suggested that the Yankees will reunite with Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
“The New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants are keeping a close eye on versatile Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who should be available at the trade deadline,” said Nightengale. Kiner-Falefa appeared in 255 games and recorded a 2.9 WAR during his two years with the Yankees.
During his stint with the squad, he gave them strong defensive and positional versatility in addition to slashing.253/.311/.333. Kiner-Falefa is currently hitting.280/.325/.349 with an 88 OPS+ while playing for the Pirates. It is impossible to overestimate his ability to play third base better than anyone else on the Yankees’ roster, even though he is hardly an offensive powerhouse.
The Bronx Bombers might seek Kiner-Falefa if they’re searching for a cheap trade target. He is an even better choice for Aaron Boone’s team because of his connection with the Bronx.
