In 2021, the Detroit Lions acquired a new quarterback in Jared Goff from the Los Angeles Rams in a huge trade, and they watched him develop into one of the NFL’s top 10 signal-callers.
Although it has been difficult to find a reliable backup, there may be greater competition this summer to support Goff.
According to an insider, the Lions might try to sign the local star who won MVP of the new UFL and was praised for his “electric” play.
The Lions are urged to include competition at quarterback. The team might try to acquire Michigan Panthers quarterback Bryce Perkins, who has guided his team to the league championship game after winning MVP, according to Christian Booher of USA Today’s Lions Wire this summer.
Booher pointed out that the Lions might add Perkins to up the ante against 2023 third-round selection Hendon Hooker and veteran Kyle Allen for the No. 2 pick.
Booher stated, “As a dual-threat signal-caller, Perkins has been outstanding for the Panthers, throwing for 1,342 yards and nine touchdowns in addition to 301 yards and five scores.”
When Lions general manager Brad Holmes was a member of the Rams’ front office, the 28-year-old signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent, giving him a taste of the NFL. During the 2022 season, he made five appearances and made one start for the Rams.
Perkins is keen to try again in the NFL, as Booher pointed out, and UFL players frequently join with NFL teams after their season concludes.
“I would really like to have another chance. From leaving the NFL to coming here, I believe everything was essential to my development as a player,” Perkins stated. I’ve put a lot of effort into getting here, and I’d want another chance. I also know how things can go at times. Hendon Hooker is the candidate the Lions want to hire.
When Hooker was initially selected in the 2023 selection, many believed he would be Goff’s successor, but things haven’t worked out that way. After leading the Lions to consecutive division victories following a career-best season, Goff earned a four-year contract deal last year, ending any speculation that Hooker may eventually win out the starting position.
In addition to dealing with injuries and inconsistent play, Hooker lost his backup position to Teddy Bridgewater late in the previous season after the veteran quarterback announced his intention to sign with Detroit.
The organization still believes in Hooker’s ability, according to Liosn general manager Brad Holmes, but he won’t be given the backup position this summer.
