In a high-profile deal with the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes formally revealed today that the team had acquired rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Confirmed at an Allen Park morning press conference, the bombshell move makes it abundantly evident that the Lions are committed to increasing depth and competitiveness in their quarterback room as they prepare for the 2025 NFL season.
“Dillon Gabriel is a welcome addition to Detroit,” Holmes remarked. He adds a special aspect to our offense with his leadership, athleticism, and ability to make plays outside the pocket. This move puts us in a strong position going forward and increases our quarterback depth.
According to reports, the trade, which was completed late last night, includes a late-round pick swap and a conditional 2026 fourth-round draft pick. The Lions had been keeping an eye on Gabriel’s status in Cleveland since minicamp, when the rookie was buried on the Browns’ depth chart behind Tyler Huntley and Deshaun Watson, according to people familiar with the negotiations.
The Browns selected Gabriel, an outstanding quarterback from Oklahoma, in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. During his collegiate career, which includes time at UCF before moving to Oklahoma, Gabriel, who is renowned for his quick release, mobility, and composure under duress, passed for over 14,000 yards and 125 touchdowns.
During OTA interviews, Lions head coach Dan Campbell also commended the move.

The arrival of Gabriel offers a strong developmental alternative to veteran Jared Goff, who still starts for the team. Hendon Hooker is also a member of the Lions’ roster, which creates a fierce competition for the backup position during training camp.
The action is consistent with Holmes’ philosophy of developing talent and taking measured risks to create long-term success. Gabriel is anticipated to take part in the final offseason practices and will join the Lions’ quarterback room right away.
