Former top prospect Ronny Mauricio was promoted to the New York Mets on Tuesday. He will take over for Mark Vientos, who left Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to a hamstring issue.
This is an unexpectedly quick return to major league play for Mauricio, New York’s No. 4 prospect according to the most recent ESPN rankings. Following a promising debut in 2023, Mauricio spent last season rehabilitating a damaged ACL. As one might assume, New York took its time getting Mauricio back, but Vientos’ injury opened up a position in the infield and increased the need to get the brilliant 24-year-old back on track.
Mauricio hit.515 with a 1.382 OPS in nine games with Triple-A Syracuse this season, including three home runs and six steals. That is undeniable, even with a tiny sample size. New York rushed him through the minor league gauntlet, but Mauricio rose to the occasion. He is now charged with assisting the MLB squad.
While Mets fans are excited to see what Mauricio can do in his second big league stint, they are also concerned about the severity of Vientos’ injuries. Vientos has had a sluggish season at the plate, but he is vital to the heart of this Mets offense, and his extended absence dampens an otherwise promising first third.

Vientos, 25, has regressed offensively and defensively this season after an excellent 27-homer, 71-RBI season in 2024. Now, this injury has set him back even farther, throwing a kink into the Mets’ long-term infield strategy.
Mauricio will have a chance to gain the position in the meantime. He’s unlikely to completely supplant Vientos and Brett Baty at third base this season (if Vientos returns), but if Mauricio translates even a percent of his Triple-A success to the big leagues, the Mets will need to contemplate a more permanent solution.
Jeff McNeil is quite productive at second base. Francisco Lindor is an MVP candidate at shortstop. That puts Mauricio under instant pressure to perform, even though he hasn’t been on stage in two years. How the Mets approach the approaching trade deadline and determine the future of their infield may depend on how well Mauricio handles this test.
Mauricio, who is still on the rise in his career, provides a tantalizing combination of power, agility, and defensive versatility to the Mets squad. He has lost his top prospect ranking, but his potential has not diminished — only his ability to demonstrate it on a consistent basis. With his health restored, Mauricio clearly has what it takes to succeed in the major leagues. He may never see Syracuse Again.
Jett Williams, New York’s top prospect, also plays shortstop. Given the Mets’ limited infield reps, it’s reasonable to wonder if Vientos and Baty will be true stalwarts in the future. Vientos may rediscover his second wind as a DH if he returns to full form, but Baty’s numbers this season aren’t very impressive. That.734 OPS isn’t enough to keep him at third base indefinitely. The Mets’ future has been accelerated out of necessity, but this shift could swiftly become permanent.
