Almost 60 games into the 2025 season, the Yankees’ starting rotation has delivered great performances, headed by offseason signee Max Fried and the reinvigorated Carlos Rodon.
Still, New York’s World Series aspirations may lead the front staff, especially general manager Brian Cashman, to look for another starting pitcher before the July 31 trade deadline.
Evaluating the Diamondbacks’ Starting Pitchers
“Currently being paid just $13.5 million by the Diamondbacks, long-time staff ace Zac Gallen is experiencing a down year,” writes Brakebill. “He will most likely garner interest before the deadline if he is available, but he will not be every team’s top choice unless he improves his situation between now and then. Although Gallen’s FIP (4.58) is lower than his ERA (5.54), he is still considerably off his career 3.29 ERA, which he posted in 2025.”
Brakebill observed Gallen’s statistics from 2024 to 2025, especially his increasing walk rate, which is reducing his WHIP.
“The major red signal here is the walk rate, which began to fall in 2024 but has grown to an alarming level in 2025. Gallen’s best walk rates were 5.6-6.6 percent between 2022 and 2023, which is a key contributor to the season’s lack of productivity, according to Brakebill.
“We’re blaming terrible luck, and FIP is only part of it. Gallen needs to get back to what he does best: limiting base runners. Gallen topped the National League with a 0.913 WHIP in 2022, and his 1.395 WHIP in 2025 isn’t even close.”
Yankees Could Be a Good Trade Fit for Gallen.
While Brakebill made no mention of Gallen and the New York Yankees, Newsweek’s Aaliyan Mohammed believes the Yankees are one team that could be interested in the veteran’s services, at least for half a season.
“The Yankees might see Gallen as a player who can help them. They should see [Luis] Gil return at some time, and having Gallen in the center of the rotation would help them get through October,” Mohammed wrote.
“Gallen is in the final year of his contract, and Spotrac predicts he will sign a six-year, $116 million deal in free agency. After giving Burnes a $210 million contract, the Diamondbacks might be ready to let Gallen go.”
Adding Gallen to the Yankees’ postseason rotation might cause problems for opposition teams, especially if Fried and Rodon continue to produce well above average stats and Gil performs as well as he did last season, when he was named the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year.
