Former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini believes Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount would be a great addition for the Black Cats this summer.
Regis Le Bris’ side qualified for the Premier League via the Championship play-off final last month, and have since become the subject of increased transfer speculation.
While there are no direct links between Sunderland and Mount, Gabbiadini believes a move to the Stadium of Light would benefit both the top-flight newcomers and a player who played only 611 minutes of league football this season.

When asked on BBC Radio Newcastle’s Total Sport whether there was one player he would like to see come for Sunderland this summer, Gabbiadini said: “whether we are going to spend – and this is the main question – someone like Mason Mount at Manchester United… They have such a high turnover of players and enormous numbers, and they hope to change it again this year. I believe he has huge potential as a player. Perhaps he hasn’t truly realized it. These types of players would be ideal for us.
“Obviously, [Chris] Mepham has Premier League experience, and [Dan] Ballard should adapt well – at the back, I believe we’re not too awful. But I believe in an influential midfielder and a goalscorer, whether a ten or a striker. Obviously, we now have [Enzo] Le Fée on a permanent contract. But it’s going to be extremely difficult, you know.
“Mason Mount has undoubtedly had some injury concerns as well, but Manchester United has a large bunch. When you return from injury, there are many players in front of you. It makes a lot of sense for me to come to a club where you can start.”

When asked about the possibility of Jordan Henderson coming to Wearside amid persistent transfer rumours, Gabbiadini responded: “Look, he must be doing well because he’s still in the England squad, isn’t he? I haven’t seen any film, but he must be performing well if they are watching him and he is selected for the next England squad.
“Wouldn’t it be like a fairy tale?” It happens from time to time. He has been an amazing player. He went on to be one of the best players in the country at times, winning the highest trophies and things.
So, I believe he would be an asset. However, it may contradict several of the club’s current values. But maybe they’ll make an exception for when we reach to the top tier.”
