On July 1, Nikola Jovic will be able to sign a rookie-scale extension, so the Miami Heat will have to make some decisions about him this summer. In 2022, the team selected him with the 27th overall pick.
Jovic, who turns 22 next week, shot 45.6% from the field and 37.1% from three-point range while averaging a career-high 10.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game for the Heat last season. He played 46 games despite missing a significant portion of the season due to a fractured right hand. Jovic played 46 games for the second consecutive year. As a rookie, he played 15 games.
Given that he hadn’t played for two months due to an injury, it makes sense that his postseason performance was inconsistent.
In Game 1, Jovic played one minute; in Game 2, he played 25 minutes (11 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists); in Game 3, he played 19 minutes (three points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block); and in Game 4, he played 29 minutes (24 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block).
Fans of the Heat are still thinking about Jovic’s performance from Game 4. His injury history and suitability for Miami are more important than anyone’s doubts about his potential. This offseason, Nikola Jovic will be able to sign a contract extension with the Heat.
The Heat would be wise to sign Jovic to a $10 million a year contract extension, particularly if his shooting gets better. for a reasonable cost during the ensuing years.
Although it’s not entirely up to Miami, the front office must decide what they want for Jovic.
Jovic might not sign an extension before the upcoming season, in which case he would be a restricted free agency. If Jovic bet on himself, the Heat could have to spend more to retain him or he might end up with a less appealing contract than the one he could sign this offseason. It would be hazardous for him to not sign a deal this summer, but it might eventually pay off—just not in Miami. The Heat shouldn’t overpay Jovic, but they should try to get him to sign an extension this offseason. It will be intriguing to see how his circumstances develop.
