SAN ANTONIO, TX — San Antonio Spurs President Gregg Popovich has officially broken his silence regarding his first major initiative in his new front-office role. The longtime head coach, now serving as both President and head coach of the Spurs, confirmed that his top priority is to bring former Spurs superstar Kawhi Leonard back to San Antonio.
Popovich, who led the Spurs to five NBA championships during his legendary coaching career, revealed during a press conference Monday morning that his vision for the franchise’s next chapter includes a bold push to reunite with Leonard.
“Bringing Kawhi back isn’t just a basketball decision — it’s a legacy decision,” Popovich said. “He’s a Finals MVP, a proven leader, and someone who knows what it means to wear the Spurs jersey. We believe the time is right.”
The announcement has already sent shockwaves throughout the league, especially as Leonard enters the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. League insiders say discussions between the Spurs and Leonard’s camp have already taken place, though no official trade or signing has been confirmed.
Popovich’s move comes amid a new era for the Spurs, anchored by rising star Victor Wembanyama. The idea of pairing the young phenom with a veteran two-way force like Leonard has ignited excitement among Spurs fans and speculation among analysts.
Leonard, who helped the Spurs capture the 2014 NBA title and won Finals MVP honors, left San Antonio in 2018 amid reported tensions with team management. Popovich’s new role may now offer a clean slate for reconciliation and revival.
“San Antonio is home,” Popovich added. “I’ve always believed in second chances, and I think Kawhi knows how much this city still appreciates him.”
While there are no guarantees, one thing is clear — the Spurs, under Popovich’s leadership, are ready to make big moves. And bringing Kawhi Leonard back may be the boldest of them all.
