Green Bay, Wisconsin – The Green Bay Packers have some wonderful news to share with their dedicated supporters. Clay Matthews III, a revered Packers great and one of the most iconic defenders in franchise history, has decided to return to the team, this time as Defensive Backs Coach for the 2025 NFL season.
Matthews, a prominent character in the Packers’ successful defenses in the 2010s, played his entire 11-year career in Green Bay. Matthews, known for his relentless pass-rushing skills, leadership, and ferocious competitiveness, was selected to five Pro Bowls and played a key role in the Packers’ Super Bowl XLV triumph in 2011. Fans and teammates alike have reacted positively to his return to the organization as a coach.
The Packers’ defensive team has struggled in recent years, particularly in the secondary, prompting general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur to look for new ideas and senior leadership to improve the defense. Hiring Matthews to teach the defensive backs is seen as a smart move to impart toughness, discipline, and technique in a young and developing secondary corps.
Matthews expressed delight about joining the Packers’ coaching staff, stating, “I’m thrilled to be back in Green Bay and to work with this group of talented defensive backs.” I want to help develop a championship-caliber defense and return the winning attitude to Lambeau Field. I understand what it takes to win here.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur reiterated those thoughts, complimenting Matthews’ deep connection to the team and understanding of the defensive game. “Clay offers a plethora of knowledge and passion to the team. His presence will be essential as we strive to enhance our defense and return to championship football.
Fans can anticipate Matthews to bring his signature zeal and intelligence to the coaching staff, assisting in the development of young players such as Jaire Alexander and new draft picks who will want to improve the secondary’s performance in 2025.
With Clay Matthews back on board, the Packers hope to construct a defense that can stand strong and support the offense as they pursue another Super Bowl win.
