Veteran point guard Chris Paul, popularly known as “CP3,” has made the shocking news that he will retire after the 2024–25 NBA season ends, marking the end of a storied chapter in NBA history.
Just days after Spurs star Victor Wembanyama suffered a season-ending injury, Paul, 40, made the revelation at a press conference Thursday morning. It was a devastating blow that rocked the basketball world. Paul, who joined San Antonio in the offseason to assist Wembanyama’s coach and pursue a last-ditch championship run, said the rookie’s injury influenced his choice.
Paul repressed his emotions as he remarked, “This game has given me everything.”
And I know it’s time after 20 years in this league. Vic’s collapse made me realize just how fast things can change. I knew it was time to move away, but I still wanted to be a part of his journey and help usher in a new age in San Antonio.
The league was rocked by Paul’s decision at the wrong time. Paul has long been regarded as one of the best point guards in NBA history because of his leadership qualities, exceptional basketball intelligence, and unparalleled floor dominance. In addition to being a 12-time All-Star and an 11-time All-NBA pick, he has represented several teams over the course of two decades, including New Orleans, Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, Golden State, and San Antonio.
NBA coaches and players responded quickly to the news, with many praising one of the most admired floor generals on social media.
Legend. Head. rival. “CP3, thank you for everything,” LeBron James wrote on Twitter.
Paul’s impact on the youthful Spurs roster was commended by head coach Gregg Popovich. “Our locker room has benefited greatly from Chris. You can’t quantify the professionalism and wisdom he’s shown to these young men,” Popovich remarked.
Paul’s declaration starts his farewell tour, which will undoubtedly be full of standing ovations, tributes, and profound respect for a player who defined an era, even though supporters may hope for one final playoff run from the Spurs this season.
