TMZ Sports has received the 911 call relating to Gregg Popovich’s medical emergency last month… and it sheds further information on how serious the situation was for the NBA great.
On April 15, a man told law enforcement that Popovich had just passed out at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House in the San Antonio region, but he didn’t identify him by name.
Initially, the man said the former Spurs coach, whom he identified as a restaurant “guest,” was “non-responding”… but he later adjusted his statements to reflect that Pop was “barely responding.”
Fortunately, just seconds later, he noted that Popovich was gradually coming around.
“OK,” the caller replied, “he’s responding now.”
“He passed out for a little while,” the man explained.
As you know, medics rushed to the scene and loaded Popovich onto a stretcher before transporting him to a neighboring hospital.
According to our sources, Popovich appeared to be suffering with the consequences of a small stroke he experienced in early November.
Thankfully, Popovich recovered … and he was able to attend new Spurs coach Mitch Johnson’s inaugural news conference a couple weeks later on May 5.
He spoke about his health at the newser, adding that “things are getting better by the day” — but he also stated that it is simply not good enough for him to continue coaching his beloved team.
Pop, on the other hand, is staying with the San Antonio organization and has been designated the team’s president after officially handing over his head coaching duties to Johnson.
