The Cleveland Browns are gearing up for a significant quarterback competition. While there are four quarterbacks vying for the job and five on the roster, Shedeur Sanders is the most talked-about possibility to be the team’s starter.
Aside from Sanders, the Browns have Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Deshaun Watson on their roster. Watson will almost certainly not start for the team during the upcoming 2025 NFL season.
Sanders faces a difficult road ahead, even if Watson is unlikely to play a significant role in the competition.
Sanders fell all the way to the fifth round of the NFL draft before being chosen at No. 144 overall when Cleveland traded up to grab him. Gabriel, on the other hand, was chosen in the third round and was definitely preferred over Sanders by the Browns.
What does the future hold for Sanders in Cleveland? No one knows, but some people don’t believe the future is bright. ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi speculated that the former Colorado Buffaloes outstanding quarterback would not even make the squad. “Getting drafted behind Gabriel adds an element of uncertainty to Sanders’ rookie season,” the writer said. “While he was largely ranked ahead of the third-rounder prior to the draft, Sanders will most likely start training camp as the fourth quarterback on the depth chart and will not be assured a roster place. Cleveland did trade up to choose him, which should give him more time to develop, but Sanders will probably have a lengthier path to the field unless he dramatically outperforms his competition.”
Sanders had impressive stats during his undergraduate career at Jackson State and Colorado. He completed 70.1% of his passes, totaling 14,347 yards, 134 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions.
