San Antonio Spurs President and Head Coach Gregg Popovich has addressed growing speculation surrounding a potential blockbuster trade involving Utah Jazz All-Star Lauri Markkanen. With rumors intensifying about the Spurs’ interest in pairing Markkanen with rising sensation Victor Wembanyama, Popovich has broken his silence—and his comments have taken fans and analysts by surprise.
Speaking at a recent press conference, Popovich was candid about the Spurs’ aggressive offseason ambitions. “We’re always looking for opportunities to build around Victor,” he stated. “Lauri’s name has come up, and that’s not by accident. He’s a player any team would be lucky to have.”
This marks the first time Popovich has publicly acknowledged the Spurs’ interest in Markkanen, a versatile 7-footer who averaged 23.2 points and 8.2 rebounds last season for the Jazz. Known for his perimeter shooting and interior presence, Markkanen would provide a dynamic complement to Wembanyama, creating one of the most towering and skilled frontcourts in the league.
The timing of this revelation follows another major headline: Giannis Antetokounmpo reportedly urged the Milwaukee Bucks front office to make a strong push for Markkanen as part of their own roster revamp. That demand by Giannis has only intensified league-wide competition for the Finnish star’s services.
Despite the growing interest, Popovich emphasized patience. “These deals don’t happen overnight,” he said. “There are a lot of factors at play—roster fit, long-term vision, and respect for what the Jazz are building.”
Jazz GM Justin Zanik has reportedly received multiple inquiries about Markkanen, but Utah remains cautious about parting with their franchise cornerstone unless the return includes significant young assets or future draft capital. The Spurs, however, possess both. With a cache of first-round picks and young talent like Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson, they’re seen as legitimate suitors if Utah becomes willing to listen.
While no deal is imminent, Popovich’s comments have added fuel to a fire that was already burning brightly. One thing is clear: if the Spurs manage to pull off this trade, it could reshape the Western Conference and mark a new era of contention in San Antonio.
