One of the more interesting camp stories for the Detroit Lions is how the organization plans to manage the backup quarterback position in the future. Jared Goff has proven to be extremely durable, and the team has every reason to be confident in their unheralded starter.
However, it is still necessary to plan for life without Goff. The Lions are currently evaluating the position.
While Hendon Hooker should be the clear favorite to earn the role, it is far from guaranteed. On Tuesday, quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell made it clear that the second option behind Goff remains available, pointing out that Hooker has started the battle well.
Hendon Hooker is far from being locked into Detroit’s backup quarterback position.
This summer, Hooker will face Kyle Allen for the backup slot. Neither player has significant starting experience, and they may have the ceilings of a low-end backup. Nonetheless, Hooker should be the favorite due to the quarterback’s athletic abilities.
It is intriguing to explore whether the Lions could look into potential enhancements. Carson Wentz is the one well-known name that Lions fans might be able to count on for a few starts. Wentz is well-suited to operate the same type of offense that Goff excelled in.
If the club decides to pursue its existing choices, the former Volunteer should be given the position. Allen isn’t going to be able to carry a team and win a game in relief; he’ll just go out there and try not to scratch the car.
While Hooker could be a greater issue, the quarterback has a far better ceiling as well. There is a reason why the Lions were ready to invest a third-round pick in him, and it signals he will not start the season as the team’s third option.
Hooker may not be the team’s official backup right now, but barring a surprise signing, this is the only way that it will end
