After receiving another gift from the NBA Draft Lottery gods, the San Antonio Spurs are ready to make a move for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Draft Lottery a few years back and received the No. 1 overall pick, laying the groundwork for Victor Wembanyama to be selected first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. In this year’s draft lottery, the Spurs struck gold again. The Spurs moved up six positions to claim the second overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft.
Instead of fantasizing about the possibilities that another young growing star could bring, the Spurs should use this gift from the basketball gods to make an even greater move.
Now that the Spurs have clinched the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, they should focus on dealing for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Even before the NBA Draft Lottery, the Spurs were one of the clubs who might potentially give the most to the Milwaukee Bucks in a deal for Giannis. What happened during the NBA Draft Lottery only reinforced the Spurs’ position. If the Spurs put together a package based around the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, no team would likely be able to outbid them.
Instead of the uncertainty of many first-round picks, the Bucks may have a certainty with the No. 2 overall pick in a deep draft. For all intents and purposes, that will probably turn into Dylan Harper. If the Bucks trade Giannis and begin rebuilding, Harper would be an excellent starting point.
Despite being overshadowed by Cooper Flagg for the most of the pre-draft process, Harper may be rated the top overall talent in many other draft classes.
If the Bucks deal Giannis, they will prioritize young talent. Sure, future draft picks are crucial, but the certainty of a young talent is also extremely valuable. The Spurs currently own both.
It’s as clear as day: the Spurs must postpone the inevitable and contact Milwaukee to see if they’re serious about dealing Giannis. Because if they do, they might hold the key to the entire bidding battle following another miraculous finish in the NBA Draft Lottery.
