The Las Vegas Raiders are closing their rookie mini-camp, during which the team’s newest rookies demonstrated their abilities for the first time. While the camp is typically reserved for rookies, the Raiders also invited a veteran for a tryout.
That player is linebacker Jaylon Smith, who did not play any downs in 2024. He temporarily played for the Raiders in 2023 due to his ties to defensive coordinator Patric Graham. Smith’s familiarity with the scheme must have been evident on the field, since he was offered a contract following his performance at the rookie mini-camp.
Smith, a second-round draft pick in 2016, has played 88 career games for the Cowboys, Giants, Packers, and Raiders, starting 69 of them. He has 11.0 sacks, two interceptions, 21 passes defended, six forced fumbles, and six fumble recoveries.
While Smith hasn’t played in a while, he gives depth to a youthful linebacker corps. However, he is not certain to be on the final roster in September.
