JUST IN: Baltimore Ravens And Commander Trade Sees Commanders Bolster Roster and Training Camp with Unheralded Signing No One Expected

Adam Peters’ first aim this offseason was to tighten the protection in front of quarterback sensation Jayden Daniels. Following several big signings via trade and draft, the Washington Commanders’ offensive line is in much better shape.

The general manager never stops looking for ways to improve the squad. Peters wants to elevate standards via competition, and the Commanders have plenty of it after a dramatic roster turnover over the last two seasons.
Another example came following the team’s rookie minicamp. It wasn’t just first-year pros who wanted to establish their claim over the two-day event. Several veteran players were trying out for the team. One did enough to secure a contract with the franchise.

Commanders Land Underrated Signing! Tyre Phillips to Protect Jaden Daniels | Hidden Gem OL? #nfl - YouTube

Commanders strengthen offensive trenches following Tyre Phillips’ good tryout.
According to rumors, the Commanders have signed offensive tackle Tyre Phillips. The former third-round pick has spent the past three seasons with the New York Giants. Bobby Johnson, Washington’s offensive line coach, previously worked for the G-Men before switching NFC East allegiances last year.
It’s unclear how much it will move the needle. The Commanders’ projected starting lineup includes five-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil and rookie Josh Conerly Jr.
Andrew Wylie is still around, and Brandon Coleman can play on the edge despite his potential move to the interior. That makes it difficult for Phillips to make the roster, but it cannot be fully ignored.

Phillips only played 53 offensive snaps for the Giants last season. Given how bad their offensive line was after left tackle Andrew Thomas went out due to injury, the fact that he wasn’t more active is concerning. The Commanders must have been impressed by his credentials, and fans are confident in Peters’ plan following the organization’s dramatic turnaround.

This deal comes with no assurances. Phillips will have to win over the coaches and immerse himself in the team’s locker room culture. Even that may not be sufficient, but it is his greatest chance of surviving.

It will be interesting to see how things turn out. Phillips might be a camp body. He might get a spot on the practice squad. If all goes as planned, he might even make the 53-man roster.
