As OTAs begin throughout the NFL, running back Nick Chubb remains one of the top available free agents at the position, and the Cleveland Browns do not appear to be in a hurry to re-sign him.
Chubb, 29, has struggled through multiple serious ailments in recent years, including a season-ending foot injury in Week 15 of the 2024 season, which followed a significant knee injury that terminated his 2023 season in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Despite having his 2024 season cut short, Chubb managed 332 running yards and three touchdowns in eight games. Chubb’s next carry, however, will most likely be elsewhere.
Cleveland Browns distance themselves from Nick Chubb.
Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry indicated that the team is not in a rush to re-sign Chubb at this time.
“I wouldn’t rule anything out, but I would say it’s probably becoming increasingly unlikely,” Berry stated in a Friday interview with Ken Carman and Anthony Lima on Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan. “We have two young men who we like. We believe Jerome plays a role. It’s just about observing how the roles shake out in the running backs room.”
Chubb, who was originally selected by the Browns in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, has run for 6,843 yards and 51 touchdowns in his career, averaging 5.1 yards per carry.
Given Chubb’s status in the Browns organization and Cleveland’s current running back situation, Berry would not rule out a reunion, but it appears the Browns are seeking to get younger at the position this fall.
“Look, you’re never going to rule out someone as near and dear to our heart as Nick,” Berry told him. “And with another year since the injury, I would anticipate him to take another stride. However, I believe that a return is less possible, at least in the medium term—with us right now.”
