Even though the Detroit Lions were relatively quiet during free agency in March, the moves they did make have already been significantly impacted by what happened at the NFL Draft. It’s no secret that Tyleik Williams’ selection might have a significant impact on the defensive line, but one of the greatest free agent losers came on the offensive side of the ball.
Detroit’s lack of action in signing wide receivers certainly signaled that they’d be drafting at the position, but their draft (and immediate post-draft) movements suggest that the only free agency wideout they signed could be sent out before ever getting an opportunity to play.
Ronnie Bell is already on the Lions’ chopping block after signing in free agency.
The Lions signed Ronnie Bell to a future/reserve deal in January, after having had played for the San Francisco 49ers and the Michigan Wolverines.
At 24 years old and having featured in 26 NFL games since being drafted in the seventh round, Bell appeared to be a solid depth piece with plenty of potential for the Lions. Or so it seemed before the draft.
Isaac TeSlaa was undoubtedly Detroit’s most significant addition. However, he is competing for a position far higher up the depth chart than Bell would have been.
. Doubling down on receiver with Georgia’s Dominic Lovett in the seventh round sent a strong message.
That message was amplified after the draft, when the Lions signed two more undrafted free agents at the position, Jackson Meeks and Jakobie Keeney-James.
The tough part for Bell is that he may not be able to remain on the practice squad. With his current level of experience, other teams may be tempted to sign him if the 49ers decide to waive him. And with ample receiving depth, the Lions will be willing to take that risk if their rookies perform well.
