With the dust from the 2025 NFL Draft cleared and the Washington Commanders gearing up for the upcoming season, general manager Adam Peters has one ignored issue that must be addressed as soon as possible.
He must pay Terry McLaurin.
Despite the upheaval caused by previous regimes, the gifted wide receiver emerged as a shining light. McLaurin stayed professional, but others allowed their frustrations to fester and, in some cases, fled when the first opportunity arose. He was also extremely industrious when everything around him disintegrated.
McLaurin persevered and was eventually rewarded for his commitment. The Commanders are now on an entirely new course. They have an ambitious owner, an expert roster builder, and a seasoned head coach. They also have a franchise quarterback for the first time since the wide receiver was drafted.

McLaurin and Jayden Daniels quickly developed a rapport. They challenged each other all last summer, which paid off in a competitive context. The former third-round pick from Ohio State once again surpassed 1,000 receiving yards. In addition to earning Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro accolades, he broke the franchise record for single-season receiving touchdowns.
Peters has already indicated that he intends to make another extension offer to McLaurin. He has one more year on his contract, but this remains a smart investment. Now that other objectives have shifted significantly, there is no better moment to recognize the undisputed locker room leader for his exceptional dedication.
There are also financial benefits to consider.
Extending McLaurin will not be inexpensive. Based on current market conditions, any new contract might net the pass-catcher approximately $30 million per year. The price is only going up, so resolving issues immediately reduces the cap figure this season and may save Peters some money in the long run.
McLaurin wants to stay. He adores the fans and is genuinely committed to the company. He meets all of the criteria for a franchise cornerstone, so negotiations should be straightforward.
Depending on the contract, McLaurin has the potential to be a Washington football lifer when everything is said and done. Nobody would be more deserving of such an honor.
