All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo may have played his final game for the Milwaukee Bucks. If Antetokounmpo seeks a trade this winter, top contenders including the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, and Houston Rockets should be interested in acquiring him. However, the San Antonio Spurs, a non-playoff team, could do the same. At least, that’s what Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley stated when he suggested Antetokounmpo play alongside fellow forward Victor Wembanyama.
Buckley identified the Spurs as one of five potential trade destinations for Antetokounmpo on Wednesday.
“Antetokounmpo might be older and less of a shooter than the ideal co-star for Wemby, but any time there’s a chance to pair one once-in-a-generation talent with another, you make that move,” according to Buckley. Buckley suggested that if the Spurs are interested in Antetokounmpo, they may have an advantage in landing the two-time MVP. “The Spurs are so rich with assets that even a megadeal of this magnitude wouldn’t deplete their collection,” according to Buckley. “They’d give up some (but not all) of Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson plus some (but not all) of the first-round picks they own, but they should still have a solid supporting cast around their stars and avenues for expanding their talent base.”
“An Antetokounmpo-Wembaynama frontcourt could change the game of basketball.” It would be an extremely unfair combination of size, length, and competence,” Buckley observed. Antetokounmpo will turn 31 in December, but he is still as dominant as ever. This season, the Bucks forward led the NBA in field goal percentage (60.1%), averaging 30.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Behind that stat line, he was selected to his ninth consecutive All-Star Game. The Bucks could trade Antetokounmpo this offseason, however, because they lost in the first round of the playoffs for the third year in a row. Milwaukee has not moved beyond the Eastern Conference Semifinals since winning the NBA championship in 2021.
