The New York Mets lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night, dropping their season record to 21-10 after 21 games. Despite a brave attempt in the ninth inning, the Mets couldn’t match the Diamondbacks in the final session. This, paired with a win by the Philadelphia Phillies over the Washington Nationals, reduced the Mets’ divisional lead to 3.5 games. Unfortunately for the Mets, this does not appear to be the worst news they would receive on Wednesday night. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza provided an update on the status of injured relief pitcher Danny Young, and the outlook is not promising.
Young was placed on the disabled list ahead to Wednesday’s game, leaving the Mets without a left-handed pitcher in their bullpen. MLB’s Anthony DiComo took to X to deliver the most recent report on the injured Mets pitcher. “Tommy John surgery is a possibility for injured Mets reliever Danny Young, according to Carlos Mendoza,” he wrote. “The Mets will know more in the coming days.”
On Sunday, Young suffered an elbow injury while playing against the Nationals. While the exact extent of the injury is unknown, the Mets could be bracing for the worst.
This season, the 30-year-old veteran has pitched in ten games for New York, with an ERA of 4.32. The former eighth-round pick from the University of Florida has pitched for three organizations in his career, including the Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves. He has a lifetime ERA of 4.01 and a WHIP of 1.440. With Tommy John’s announcement being weighed, Young may miss the balance of this season as well as a portion of the ’26 season.
