OFFICIAL VERDICT: Atlanta Falcons GM Terry Fontenot Shares Official Front Office Decision On Kirk Cousins’ Falcon Future

Kirk Cousins had a mixed 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons, with both good play and significant errors. Many fans are surprised that he is still on the team despite trade speculations and being benched late in the season. Cousins threw for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions while signing a four-year, $180 million contract.

Prior to rookie Michael Penix Jr. taking over in Week 16, he guided the Falcons to a 6-8 record as a starter. Cousins’ future was called into question after a difficult five-game run during which he threw nine interceptions and just one touchdown. He remains with the team through 2025, although it’s unclear if he will stick around.

Speaking with Adam Schein on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio on Tuesday, Fontenot stated that the organization is remaining understanding of Cousins’ predicament and receptive to all options.

“There, we need to exercise patience and be open with everyone on our roster, not just Kirk,” Fontenot stated. Since the draft ended, I’ve likely already spoken with six or seven general managers. Since the draft changes certain things in terms of needs and surplus, they are discussing their roster and we are discussing ours.

According to Fontenot, if the appropriate opportunity presents itself, the Falcons will continue to be aggressive.

“We’re going to be aggressive and we’re going to do it if something with Kirk or any other player comes up that makes sense and will benefit this team,” he stated. “However, we must constantly ask: Is it best for the Atlanta Falcons if it won’t eventually benefit this team? And we will be prepared to do it if it is.
