The Detroit Lions ended the 2025 NFL Draft with seven rookies. While GM Brad Holmes’ decision to reinforce the trenches with two defensive and two offensive linemen was not shocking, neglecting the pass rush completely was.
Despite popular opinion that Detroit has an evident need at the EDGE, the Lions have yet to address the position. The absence of free agent signings was logical, as good pass rushers are difficult to find and typically command a high price. That is why many believed the Lions would utilize one of their early draft picks to replace Aidan Hutchinson as a starter.
This raises the chances of Za’Darius Smith’s return.
Chances of Za’Darius Smith Returning to Detroit Increased Following the Draft
Smith, who was acquired by the Browns in a midseason trade, performed admirably during his time in Detroit. The 32-year-old defender recorded four sacks, three tackles for loss, and ten quarterback hits in eight Lions games, demonstrating that he could still perform at a high level.
Despite his production, Smith was released by the Lions at the end of the season. Detroit wound up saving some money against the cap in the process, but there are whispers that both sides are interested in reuniting.
Smith spent time in Detroit this summer and is still unsigned, despite being one of the finest free agents on the market.
Joining the Lions would not only allow Smith to start and play a significant role, but he would also have the opportunity to win a Super Bowl in his 11th season in the league. Given that Detroit is unlikely to find a better choice at this point in the offseason, they should make sure Smith returns for the 2025 season.
