A draft cannot be fully judged the day after or even within a year of its completion, but Terry Fonenot and the Falcons appear to have made the most of their five picks this weekend, tying the smallest draft class in Falcons team history.
Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. will assist with what has been Atlanta’s longest-standing issue for the last two decades: sacking the quarterback. Nobody anticipated Walker to fall all the way to 15, and James Pearce Jr. could be the best pass rusher in the entire draft class.
The Falcons were then able to choose Xavier Watts in the third round, who could be the team’s starting safety in Week 1 with Jessie Bates III, while Billy Bowman Jr., Atlanta’s fourth-round pick, will fight with Clark Phillips and Dee Alford for the starting nickel position.
If the Falcons can find four immediate contributors in a five-man class, it will undoubtedly be the best draft class of Terry Fontenot’s career as general manager, and some of their undrafted free agent acquisitions from yesterday should not be missed.
Notable Falcons Undrafted Free Agents.
Cobee Bryant was a highly ranked undrafted free agent who was expected to be selected on Day 3 of the draft. His physique is his most significant flaw. At six feet and 180 pounds, he could use a little more size, especially given he’s not the fastest corner (4.53 40-yard dash). However, Bryant, like Watts and Bowman Jr., possesses excellent ball skills and is extremely competitive.
Given the Falcons’ lack of cornerback depth, his inclusion on the 53-man roster would be unsurprising. Hell, he’ll have plenty opportunities to get starting repetitions at nickel, competing with Bowman Jr., Dee Alford, and Clark Phillips.
