Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has made it clear—there is no quarterback controversy in Columbus. With spring practice in full swing, Day addressed the media and sent a firm message regarding the Buckeyes’ new starting quarterback.
Following Kyle McCord’s transfer to Syracuse, all eyes have been on the Buckeyes’ quarterback battle. While some speculated that Devin Brown and five-star freshman Julian Sayin could compete for the job, Day put any doubts to rest. He confirmed that Will Howard, the transfer from Kansas State, is the clear leader heading into the 2024 season.
“Will is our starting quarterback,” Day stated. “He’s come in, handled himself like a pro, and has done everything we’ve asked of him. His experience, leadership, and toughness are exactly what we need to lead this team.”
Howard, who started at Kansas State the past two seasons, brings veteran experience to a Buckeyes squad looking to reclaim the Big Ten title and make a run at the College Football Playoff. The 6-foot-5 quarterback threw for over 5,000 yards and 48 touchdowns in his career with the Wildcats and now steps into one of the most high-profile jobs in college football.
Despite naming Howard the starter, Day emphasized that competition remains open in the quarterback room. Brown, Sayin, and sophomore Lincoln Kienholz will still get opportunities to push for playing time, but Day made it clear that Ohio State’s immediate focus is on getting Howard comfortable in the offense.
“Every position has competition, and the guys behind Will know they have to be ready,” Day said. “But right now, our priority is building chemistry and making sure our offense is clicking heading into the season.”
Ohio State fans have been eager for quarterback clarity after last season’s struggles under McCord. With a revamped offense and a veteran leader in Howard, the Buckeyes appear set for a fresh start in 2024.
Now, the pressure is on Howard to prove he can lead Ohio State back to the top of the college football world.
